Rachel Caruana is a Maltese artist currently living and working in Rotterdam. Her most recent work consists of a collection of mixed-media paintings, inspired by a fascination with the concept of surrender. Through her work she explores how this phenomenon manifests and relates to different aspects of her life, while also attempting to understand its paradoxical nature, how surrender can embody both immense strength and delicate vulnerability. Throughout this journey she has explored surrender from a point of view of curiosity, as a method of self-healing and personal growth, but also from a more nostalgic, childlike perspective; an approach that embraces spontaneity. She depicts the movement of the human body for its ability to convey profound messages without words, creating a silent language that reminds the viewer of the powerful stories our bodies can tell in silence. Her focus on the human body originates from her background in dance. Inspired from a young age by the expressive potential of body language, this has remained a central element in her artistic practice. By deliberately omitting facial features, she focuses the viewer’s attention entirely on the form and gestures of the body. This creates a more universal connection, allowing the viewer to connect with the work on an emotional level, without the influence of individual identity.
